Program Director: Frances Gilliland

Frances Gilliland holds a degree in Environmental Science from University of California, Santa Barbara. She previously worked for the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District for 17 years inspecting businesses, reviewing land-use projects, and implementing business assistance and public outreach efforts, including representing the APCD on the Green Award Consortium. In 2002, she was recognized as the Pollution Prevention Advocate of the Year by the Western Regional Pollution Prevention Network. In 2007, Frances started her own business, Gilliland Environmental, and was instrumental in launching the Green Business Program of Santa Barbara County (GBPSBC). Frances currently serves as Program Director of the GBPSBC. Frances has been involved with the California Green Business Network since its formation, and currently serves as Board Secretary.


Fun Fact:  I traveled to Morelia, Mexico with the Rotary Club of Goleta where we partnered with a local Rotary Club and SEE International in their project to provide free cataract surgeries to those in need. I was honored to witness people get their eyesight (and their lives) back!

Intern: Maya Colehower

Maya is an incoming fourth year at the University of California, Santa Barbara and is working towards a Bachelor’s of Arts in Environmental Studies and minor in Professional Writing. Growing up in Santa Cruz piqued her interest in the environment, where she enjoyed spending time in the ocean and realized how much of an impact humans have on the ecosystems around us. This internship will allow Maya to work closely with local businesses obtaining their Green Certification and convey why this is beneficial for their business in addition to the environment. In the future, she hopes to use these skills to frame sustainable practices as a good business decision for companies.


Fun Fact: I like to surf, knit, and bake in my free time!

Intern: Skylar Bowyer

Skylar Bowyer is entering her third year at the University of California, Santa Barbara earning her Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Studies while also participating in the Technology Management Certificate Program. Skylar’s passion for learning about the environment began during a summer internship with Arroyo and Foothills Conservancy in Los Angeles, where she worked to preserve and restore native habitats by removing invasive plants, led educational hikes for students, restored hiking trails, recorded data from wildlife cameras, and learned about plants and animals native to California. At UCSB Skylar is an active member of her sorority Kappa Alpha Theta and participates in the on-campus organization Greeks Go Green as a member of the waste committee. Skylar has a particular interest in green business and consulting and plans to utilize what she has learned through her studies and experiences in helping local Santa Barbara businesses become green certified. 


Fun Fact: I have plans to do an abroad field study program next winter in Thailand and Indonesia to conduct research on coastal marine habitats!

Intern: Emma Schaberg

Emma is currently a third year student at the University of California, Santa Barbara and is earning her Bachelor’s of Arts degree in Environmental Studies as well as a certificate in the Technology Management Certificate Program. Emma became passionate about the conservation and protection of our planet through working with Wild Kids Leadership Academy in high school and going on various backpacking trips through Montana. Last year, she also did field work with the Biodiversity and Restoration Department at UCSB and learned about the different native and invasive species in Goleta.  Emma is also an active member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. With this internship, Emma will work with small businesses to learn how they can obtain their Green Certification and how she can best help them throughout the process. Emma's goal is to take the skills and knowledge she will learn from this and one day help bigger corporations become more sustainable and environmentally friendly.

Intern: Nikolai Sorich

Niko is an aspiring graphic designer who hopes to turn his creative interests into a career. He wishes to use his visual communication skills to create graphics that celebrate Green Businesses as well as inspire others to help protect our environment. He hopes that working with the Green Business Program will allow him to design eye-catching graphics for small local businesses and learn ways in which he can help improve environmental sustainability in his community.
