Program Director: Frances Gilliland

Frances Gilliland holds a degree in Environmental Science from University of California, Santa Barbara. She previously worked for the Santa Barbara County Air Pollution Control District for 17 years inspecting businesses, reviewing land-use projects, and implementing business assistance and public outreach efforts, including representing the APCD on the Green Award Consortium. In 2002, she was recognized as the Pollution Prevention Advocate of the Year by the Western Regional Pollution Prevention Network. In 2007, Frances started her own business, Gilliland Environmental, and was instrumental in launching the Green Business Program of Santa Barbara County (GBPSBC). Frances currently serves as Program Director of the GBPSBC. Frances has been involved with the California Green Business Network since its formation, and currently serves as Board Secretary.


Fun Fact:  I traveled to Morelia, Mexico with the Rotary Club of Goleta where we partnered with a local Rotary Club and SEE International in their project to provide free cataract surgeries to those in need. I was honored to witness people get their eyesight (and their lives) back!

Assistant: Kori Nielsen

Kori Nielsen is an Environmental Management and Protection graduate, with a focus and background in sustainability from Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo. She is an accredited LEED GA and is passionate about helping businesses and schools operate as sustainably as possible. Her passion for sustainability sparked when she attended a consortium for sustainability study abroad program at EARTH University in Costa Rica where she learned about EARTH University’s unique approach to education, investigated and analyzed community issues, and assessed the social and environmental impact of our actions as individuals and companies. Since then, she has worked for the Central Coast Green Building Council and Sustainable Future where she fostered sustainability education throughout our community. She has loved working directly in a variety of capacities with business owners, consultants, and community members to achieve the common goal of sustainability education and achievement.


Fun Fact: I have paraglided, ziplined and skydived! Next up, jetskiing!

Olivia Bindon

Olivia Bindon is in her fourth year at UC Santa Barbara double majoring in Environmental Studies and Communication. She has a special interest in green building and architecture and is an accredited LEED GA. She has grown her passion for sustainability and environmental issues both through her studies and her work and research. As a Research Assistant with the Bren School, she assisted in developing a communication strategy for water conservation communication for Santa Barbara’s water utility. She also works as the Green Certification Coordinator for UCSB Sustainability, certifying environmentally conscious departments, events, and sports teams on campus. She is so excited to be working with the Santa Barbara Green Business Program to help local businesses become more sustainable and stay open during these trying times.


Fun Fact: I studied abroad in Berlin and hope to move there in the future!
